Things which just happened in the UK:
- Jeremy Corbyn, Labour MP since 1983, just won the campaign to be the new Leader of the Labour Party
- He won with a whopping 59.5% majority - the next closest got 19% of the vote
- In his thank you speech he called out the media for their cruelty to previous leader Ed Miliband
- He took the time to SINCERELY commend his fellow candidates for their hard work in the campaign (along with joking that they are now planning to form an ABBA tribute band)
Jeremy Corbyn:
- wears jumpers his mother knitted for him and he refuses to be embarrassed when the media taunt him for it; they’re practical, warm and made with love, so what’s the big deal?
- was revealed to have claimed literally the lowest amount out of all the MPs in the 2009 expenses scandal
- is anti university tuition fees, anti war, anti fracking, anti austerity
- is pro living wage, pro higher taxes for the wealthier, pro animal rights, pro equality for all - women, LGBT, migrants, refugees, etc.
- was the only Labour MP to vote in favour of a Lib Dem amendment to make homophobic discrimination illegal in 1998 - before the introduction of the Equality Act
- was arrested in 1984 for protesting against the Apartheid; he served on the National Executive of the Anti-Apartheid Movement and is a prominent member of Amnesty International
- has relentlessly and fiercely fought for the rights of refugees and migrants
- was awarded the Gandhi International Peace Award in 2013
- stands up for the rights of the underdog, whoever they may be
